I believe this technique should work on older versions such as Windows 7. In case you run into a problem, just go through the instructions to see if you missed something. Do note, however, that I haven’t covered every Docker feature. You may encounter a bug or an unsupported feature that requires a workaround, or may have no solution at all.
This can cause issues when running musl-based distros such as Alpine Linux. Alpine users can use the alpine-pkg-glibc package to deploy glibc alongside musl to run the integration. A simpler solution is to switch to Linux for development.

Coming from my Mac which I still have I can go from a wiped computer to a well running environment in a day. Windows on the other hand I'd need atleast 2 days and I'd probably miss half of the random tweaks I've done to make everything work just how it should from the start. I use a docker environment called devilbox that runs pretty well without a ton of performance issues.
When an update is available, Docker Desktop displays an icon on the Docker menu to indicate the availability of a newer version. Additionally, the Software Updates section in Settings also notifies you of any updates available to Docker Desktop. You can choose to download the update right away, or click the Release Notes option to learn what’s included in the updated version. When you are in VSCode, you can use the terminal in VSCode to pull your code and start working natively from your Windows machine. Open VSCode and install the Remote - WSL extension.

Nested virtualization scenarios, such as running Docker Desktop on a VMWare or Parallels instance might work, but there are no guarantees. For more information, see Running Docker Desktop in nested virtualization scenarios. Virtualisation enabled, yet still unable to install DOCKER CE. One workaround I tried was to use choco package manager. I have Thinkpad carbon X1/Windows 10 home edition. I also see Hyper-V params set to Yes as @aperk mentioned.
These will install everything you need to start using Docker on your Windows 10 Home OS. The last one is a bit out of the scope of this article, but we should start from somewhere, no? But it turns out that the latest versions of Docker require Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education.
Install from the command line
Maybe because i’m now on post cycle therapy supplements so my focusing is damaged? Thanks a bit of guidance would be appreciated. My computer can run VMs no problem, but just because it’s using Win10 Home it can’t run Docker? Under Ubuntu live image it works fine, so it’s definitely not a hardware issue. And Hypervisor support is enabled under Programs and Features. @JanTuđan - despite my comment above, if you want to use docker you must get into Linux.
I personally will try to finish the previously mentioned tutorial and then, who knows, may be I will start using Docker for each project I do. Now that we have all we need, we may spend our time on actual learning, either by following a docker-related tutorial or reading a book. No matter what you want to do next, you have all the tools you will need. To get rid of the invalid settings error as seen in the above screenshot, simply increase Video Memory under the Display tab in the settings option.
You cannot install Docker for Windows on Windows 10 Home according to the documentation. This is to discuss kernel based WSL derived issues. Since moving to Windows 11, the project has been almost unusable due to massively slow pagespeed . This page contains information on installing Docker Desktop on Windows 10 Home. If you are looking for information about installing Docker Desktop on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, see Install Docker Desktop on Windows.

Refer to the back up and restore datasection to learn how to preserve important data before uninstalling. With Docker Desktop running on WSL 2, users can leverage Linux workspaces and avoid having to maintain both Linux and Windows build scripts. In addition, WSL 2 provides improvements to file system sharing, boot time, and allows access to some cool new features for Docker Desktop users. Docker Desktop installs 2 special-purpose internal Linux distros docker-desktop and docker-desktop-data. The first (docker-desktop) is used to run the Docker engine while the second (docker-desktop-data) stores containers and images. Neither can be used for general development.
Running docker-compose up successfully fires up the website but I then get hit with loads of issues I never encountered while running the project via docker desktop without WSL2. I have the same thing, but I also noticed that Hyper-V has to be enabled. As in, if your copy of Windows 10 has Hyper-V, you can install it by simply enabling it because it’s already there.

If you plan to reformat your machine, you’ll have to go through the same process again. It’s worse if your job is to install Docker on multiple machines running Windows 10 Home. As you probably know, Docker requires a Linux kernel to run Linux Containers. For this to work on Windows, you’ll need to set up a Linux virtual machine to run as guest in Windows 10 Home.
Use docker save -o images.tar image1 [image2 ...] to save any images you want to keep. See save in the Docker Engine command line reference. Docker Desktop does not start automatically after installation. To start Docker Desktop, search for Docker, and select Docker Desktop in the search results.

Use docker load -i images.tar to reload previously saved images. Uninstall the current version of Docker Desktop and install a different version , or reset your VM disk. When prompted, ensure the Enable WSL 2 Features option is selected on the Configuration page. The Docker Desktop installation includes Docker Engine, Docker CLI client, Docker Compose,Notary,Kubernetes, and Credential Helper.
I don't want to waste a lot of time from my workshop with this. I need something that works from the first try, regardless of the OS. So far I tried Windows 10, Ubuntu in a VM, and Raspberry Pi 4. The easiest and fastest way was to use the Docker image on each of them. On Ubuntu and Raspbian it worked flawlessly from the first try, but on Windows...
Troubleshooting describes common problems, workarounds, and how to get support. Docker Desktop starts after you accept the terms. Your Windows machine must meet the following requirements to successfully install Docker Desktop. The example below is from my installation. Please use your specific details where necessary.
